Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy

Providing psychotherapeutic services to children and adolescents and supervision to fellow psychotherapists working with young people.

Rachel Veerman qualified in Child Art Psychotherapy from the School of Medicine at University College Dublin in 2007 and from the School of Psychotherapy at St Vincent's University Hospital in 2019. She holds diplomas in Integrative Supervision and Jungian Psychotherapy and is trained in Trauma Therapy, CBT, Motivational Interviewing and Systemic Family Therapy.

Rachel's approach is relational, psychodynamic and person centred. She works at the pace of a young person with respect for diversity and individuation, aiming to carefully balance the need for privacy and self determination with a parent or carers need for feedback and involvement. Over the past twenty years Rachel has worked with young people experiencing a wide range of difficulties, both innate and environmental, but more often a complex and dynamic mix of inner and outer experiences. This is where the use of creativity, play and non verbal communication are of vital importance and can enable a young person to feel heard and attuned to where experiences are far beyond words.

Rachel has extensive experience working across educational systems, addiction services and the community arts, this brings expertise and depth to her work. As a Supervisor she promotes reflective practice, humility and openness. Rachel sees artistic expression as a tool with which to connect to the self, each other and the world around us. Creativity can promote development and foster an increase in communication both within the therapeutic, as well as the supervisory space providing insight and additional perspectives.

Rachel is a registered member of the Irish Council of Psychotherapy and an accredited member of the Association of Child Art Psychotherapists, ACAP, who are a Member Organisation of both the Psychoanalytic Section of the ICP and the European Federation of Arts Therapists. She is one of the two Company Directors of ACAP and a serving member of the board of the Psychoanalytic Section of the ICP. She is a visiting lecturer and supervisor on the current four year Professional Masters Training Programme in Child Art Psychotherapy with the School of Medicine at UCD. Rachel is committed to life long  and reciprocative learning and furthering the development and training within the field of child and adolescent mental health.

Rachel's Services

Art Psychotherapy

Using art as a means of expression and healing for children and adolescents. Without promoting a focus on aesthetic value, art can become a vehicle to help a young person navigate and communicate the complexity of life. Art can act as both vehicle and regulator. It can cross the boundaries of time and hold elements of the past, present and future.

Coping with Bereavement and Loss

Supporting young individuals in dealing with the difficulties of loss and grief. Separation, bereavement and isolation can induce feelings which go far beyond the reach of words. Art can provide a bridge between a child's inner and outer world, thus improving an ability to feel heard and connected.

Anxiety and Self Esteem

Helping children and adolescents manage feelings of anxiety and improve self esteem. Self expression and an increase in methods of communication can both empower and enhance self worth. Art can help regulate complex feelings and provide space and perspective within the developing psyche, promoting growth and resilience.

Integrative Supervision

Rachel provides method specific supervision to fellow Child Art Psychotherapists and integrative supervision to fellow practicioners who specialise in working with children and adolescents. In person, individual, group and online sessions are available. The Seven Eyed Model, alongside the Vasarheyli Method for group supervision provide an overall framework. Hawkins, P., & Shohet, R.
